Whittard Luxury Hot Chocolate

I know, its not tea! I like to keep you on your toes!

Though my preference for hot beverages of the tea-ey variety has been thus far well documented on this bit of web space, so has my love of things chocolatey so I'm sure it won't come as a huge shock that I recognise there is a time and a place for hot chocolate in the world too - and my recent hot chocolate urgings have all been met by Whittards.

My go-to at the minute is the Rocky Road Hot Chocolate - I got this one for Christmas from my very clever sister-in-law, who later confessed she was very tempted to keep it for herself! This is a chocolate drink with the flavour of marshmallows, toffee, cherries, raisins and sultanas. For me it's the cherry flavour that comes through strongest (after the chocolate) which suits me perfectly!

Though as you can see I attempted to emphasize the marshmallow flavour by adding a couple of my own... it's only now, looking at the pictures, I realise how ludicrously overdone my drink looks but I was always taught that if a job is worth doing it's worth doing right!

I do also have the 'normal' hot chocolate in my stash, and it really is very lovely - rich, luxurious and decadent - but it just seems a shame to be drinking plain hot chocolate when there are so many more interesting flavours on offer from Whittards so I've left this one at work for now in case of chocolate emergencies!

And them I'm afraid my third and final one brings happy and sad news - happy because I have discovered one of the most delicious tastes on the planet, and sad because this no longer seems to be available on the Whittards webpage so might prove tricky to stock up on!

After discussing the pros and cons of the various flavours available after persuing the webpage, one of my work colleagues turned up at the office with the Lemon Meringue White Hot Chocolate. While I'm always happy for anyone to bring in any kind of chocolatey treat to help us get through the week, I definitely remember thinking to myself that it wasn't the flavour I'd have chosen! Still, I didn't want to be rude and readily agreed to testing it out - oh my!

I don't know why it works, it doesn't seem like it should but my god it does! The lemon is sharp but sweet and works with the creaminess of the white hot chocolate in a way I would never have expected. This is truly delightful!

But unfortunately this seems to be such a rare and special thing that it doesn't come out too often - instead I need to save it for when I really need it! But at the first word of a re-release I'll be buying enough I can have this at every meal, and twice before bed!

In the meantime I suppose lack of access to this gives me chance to check out a few of the other flavours available from Whittards - and there's still so many I'm not sure where to start! Chilli? Orange? Strawberry White? Let me know if you have any favourites you think I might like!

(I realise I should have tidied my work desk a bit before taking these (or, y'know, generally....) but didn't want to lose authenticity... and I'm lazy)

  2. What a brilliant blog! Thank you for the push to get an order in at Whittards. I live in France so can't get my hands on any of their amazing flavours until I get back to the UK. I was given their Luxury White Hot Chocolate for Christmas and thought that was the most incredible thing I've ever tasted. Like you, I added Whittards marshmallows in apparently vast quantity. I find if you keep stacking the marshmallows until someone watching starts laughing at you, you'll get just about enough. My pot of it is now, sadly, depleted (due to the efforts of no-one other than me) and I've almost been tempted to sell the carpets to acquire some more. Your post drove me to the Whittard website. I'm intrigued by the Hazelnut White and will definitely be stocking up in the UK next time and will also be experimenting with the lemon meringue that you have persuaded me to try too (I wouldn't normally go near such a thing but, well, anything in the name of research...)
I'm not looking to coming back through customs with the car stashed full of bags of white powder but so long as the sniffer dogs let me through, I should be OK.
Great blog though. Keep it going!
    Cheers
