Tea at Cafe Natural, Northallerton

With time being of the essence, on my recent tea-trip to Northallerton I thought it would make sense to try to tick two of the town's recommended tea houses off my list. We headed straight to Lewis & Cooper as soon as we got there (picking this one first for no other reason than it was the one we came across first!), wandered round town for a couple of hours, did some shopping, and then when we thought we could face more tea, headed to Cafe Natural.

Above a Leather Shop on the High Street, I'm glad I worked out where this was before I headed out or I might have struggled to find it!

This is the first time I've visited one of the places on the Welcome To Yorkshire Tea Trail and thought 'I wonder how that got on the list'. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad place, not by any stretch,.. it just didn't seem 'special' in any way. Before I tear it apart (not that I intend to do that really!) I will point out that I did arrive here a bit late in the day - only about half an hour before closing (but in my defense I didn't expect it to close at 4pm on a Saturday!), which might account for a few of the issues I encountered. The most disappointing of which was that there really wasn't much left in the way of cake or other baked treats. I'm assuming this wasn't the case earlier in the day, but the cake counter was largely empty, with a couple of pre-packaged bits and pieces and a lonely looking slice of something chocolatey, so with a heavy-heart I decided to give the sweet treats a miss.

I did instead order myself a Chicken, Mozzarella and Pesto Panini - which came with chips for an extra 50p. This had its good points and bad points - the panini was full of really nice tasty chicken and was overall pretty darn good. the presentation was a bit sloppy - bits of burnt cheese that had seeped out in the grilling process stuck to it and stuff like that, nothing that would usually bother me too much if I'd just popped into any old cafe but I think I had higher expectations here and was judging more harshly than usual. A lot of the chips were undercooked too - though I'm putting this down to our late arrival.

On the plus side, the pot of tea I was presented with was huge and would have kept me going ages had I got there earlier. The cake list on the menu is pretty decent sounding as long as you can get those cakes most of the time, and the service was pleasant. There was nothing really wrong or bad, I just can't imagine it being one of the top 30-something places to get tea in Yorkshire.

Sorry Cafe Natural, but my tea-and-cake recommendation for Northallerton is Lewis & Cooper!

Any of you been here and see something I didn't? Let me know if I'm wrong!

(Also, sorry about the lack of photos, was having battery issues!)

  1. The chips do look undercooked. I thick I would still want to try it for the massive pot of tea though, I drink my tea out of a massive mug and get distressed when I go somewhere and they give me a normal sized drink!

  2. First of all I would like to say excellent blog! I had a quick question which I'd
like to ask if you don't mind. I was interested to find out
how you center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing.
I have had a hard time clearing my thoughts in getting my
ideas out. I do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to
15 minutes are wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or hints?

    Appreciate it!

about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you could do with a few pics to drive the message home a little bit, but other than that, this is excellent
blog. A great read. I will definitely be back.
