Pizza Express York Review Summer Menu

We do love a good day out in York, and the recent acquisition of the Jorvik Pastport (meaning we get into a bunch of the city's museums for free for the next 12 - well, 11 now, months) suggests we'll be spending plenty of time there in the future too - well it's always nice to have an excuse isn't it!

We popped over at the weekend to learn wander round in the sunshine, learn about archaeology, and most importantly - eat pizza.

It can be a bit of a tricky one, eating out with kids in York, as most of the really good food places I would generally call into are pubs and it's not always easy to tell which of these are family friendly and which aren't - but pizza is always a good call and always goes down well with the little ones. Not to mention, like a lot of places in York, the Pizza Express building is rather stunning. Plus its right on the river too, which always makes you feel a bit like you are on holiday!

This is what we got:

The Drinks

hugo pizza express - elderflower and prosecco

Both the little monsters went asked for apple juice. I can't tell you much about the apple juice as I don't really like it! But as far as apple juice goes it looked nice, had a really creamy/cloudy sorta look instead of that rancid browny colour you usually get so I think it looked a lot more appealing than usual! the kids loved it anyway, and drank it all up.

Since it was a hot sunny day and it was to be a museum filled afternoon, I though it was only fair that I treat myself to a 'proper' drink and the new 'Hugo' from the Summer Menu. Prosecco, with elderflower, fresh mint and lemon over ice - it was a refreshing and delicious as it sounds!

Pizza Express were also very happy to provide jugs of iced water for tables too - always helpful in this heat (especially with my spicy pizza, but well get to that!)

The Starters

The little ones both ordered from the 'Piccola Menu' (which is the kids menu, in case you hadn't guessed) and they both loved the fact that this came with a starter as they never usually get one! The Piccola starter is a small portion of the delicious baked dough balls, served with little nibbly bits of salad and a choice of either garlic butter or olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I'm assuming these were primarily intended for the dough balls but Little Miss insisted her cucumber was delicious dipped in the garlic butter. I wasn't sure whether to tell her off for being insane or congratulate her for not wasting?

My starter was the Bruschetta Originale - tomato, red onion, garlic and pesto on delicious warm bread. This is such a simple thing that you should be able to make it home easily but it never ever seems to taste quite right if I do! It's my go-to Italian starter and is so fresh and light that's its perfect for hot days.

The Mains

Probably the biggest surprise of the day for me is when Little Miss decided she didn't want pizza as its usually her favourite thing, but thankfully the Piccola menu caters well for pasta lovers too. The kids pasta is available with a choice of four sauces: bolognaise, bianca (béchamel with mushroom), napoletana (creamy tomato) and burro (garlic butter). Devouring a tub of it on her cucumber must have given her the taste for garlic butter as that's the one she chose. I pinched a bit to 'test it out' - I personally would have struggled to eat a full bowl of plain pasta in garlic butter I think, but the bit I had was nice with the pasta cooked perfectly.

Her brother did go for pizza, and opted for the kids Pollo (chicken) Pizza. I unfortunately didn't get to try any of this one but it looked lovely and the lad ate it all up with glee so I'm guessing it tasted pretty good too!

I had pizza too, and selected the Pollo Forza Romana, one of the Summer Specials. This thing was HUGE! You can see on the picture it's size in comparison to my knife and fork, and the way it hangs of the table! Despite it's size, the really thin base means it wasn't too heavy and filling (that being said, I couldn't quite finish it all despite my best efforts!). This beast was topped with chicken marinated in smoky chilli powder, garlic and dried chilli flakes, chargrilled red & yellow peppers, roquito peppers, Gran Moravia cheese, and chilli oil as well as the usual tomato and mozzarella. It had quite the kick to it, but wasn't too spicy as to be unenjoyable - delicious!

The Desserts

summer desserts

Then came desserts - obviously the most important part of any meal! You get a kids dessert as standard with the Piccola menu, and Harry wasted no time with his mini chocolate fudge cake - I'm surprised I managed to take a picture of it, it was gone that quick!

All the kids meals also get finished off with a Bambinoccino, which is what's got Miss Emily all excited in this picture, while she finishes off her mini sundae. Despite it's appearance there's no coffee in there (trust me, this girl on caffeine is a terrifying idea!), just frothed milk with a sprinkling of chocolate powder. It's a really nice little touch that makes the little ones feel grown up!

My dessert had to be the Summer Menu's Strawberry and Cream Glory. Nothing really says summer like strawberries and cream! This massive glass of strawberry gelato, thick double cream and fresh strawberries was pretty much everything you could want in a summer dessert!

Well that covers the food and I've written plenty so I won't go on too much about the lovely building, the great service or anything else, other than to say we all left feeling very happy, so big thanks to Pizza Express for having us!
